Cake Poll

Hello, readers. It's been a long time since we had a poll post. This one is for those who have planned events that have already taken place.

Do you have any wisdom to impart on deciding on details about the (wedding) cake? Is it wiser to get just flavors you like or to mostly cater to the palettes of your guests? Did you end up with a lot of leftovers? How many people could your cake serve vs. the number of people showed up?

  1. We went for a variety of flavors. The biggest tier was chocolate cake with lemon curd filing and lemon icing (our personal pick), the middle was super lemony (lemon cake, lemon curd, possibly lemon icing - maybe it was vanilla buttercream actually) and the smallest layer was chocolate cake with peanut butter filling and icing. That one went quick, and I think I might have switched out the smallest and largest tiers if I had it to do over again. We also had some vegan cupcakes for our nondairy friends (they were chocolate with pumpkin filling if I remember correctly).

We had the cakes made by a friend who went to pastry school - so I'm not certain about ordering. We ended up right where we thought we would be with numbers (we estimated 120, had a final count of 115 I think) and we ended up with exactly enough. No one went without, and there was no leftovers (I think - there might have been a little bit, but it was all eaten up by the next morning). We had our cakemaker make up a small version of the biggest tier (but with chocolate ganache on top... I'm sorely wishing said cakemaker hadn't moved to Ireland as I write this. mmmmmmmm) for our first anniversary, so no stale thawed cake for us!

Hope this helps - I need to find cake to eat now!

    Love,
    Katy

  3. Pick whatever flavors you two will like for all the layers, that way if there are leftovers, you guys won't be stuck with any flavor you dislike! If you want to be nice, then pick the most popular flavor of most of your guests for your biggest tier, but definitely don't just cater to your guests. Either way, you and Doug should like all the flavor combos of your cake, no matter what the guests like. If you pick some flavors that are different and unique, maybe some of the guests will find a new favorite flavor combo from your wedding! If you are keeping the top tier for you anniversary, then definitely choose flavors for that tier that you and Doug love since it is your tier! Based on your RSVP count, get cake for as close to that as you can, with just a little over because it is better to have a little extra vs running out. A little extra is always a tasty treat for those wanting seconds or for the next day! :)
